Hi friend,
Short answer: Probably not.
Long answer: read below…
We are currently staying at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Hill Country, TX in Canyon Lake, which is just around the corner and down the street from the Guadalupe River. We came here excited to take advantage of the last weekend of summer before the kids start school on Wednesday, but we didn’t make any attempt to research the water levels before our visit. And since arriving, we have found out that Canyon Lake is at what appears to be record lows. My personal guess is that it is 15+ feet below the ideal water level, meaning no water is coming in and no water is going out. This also means the Guadalupe River is insanely low and pretty much at a standstill.
We have also discovered that the “Guadalupe River Access Trail” off “S Access Rd” near the Canyon Lake Dam has closed off all its parking, allowing for all public access to the southern start of the Guadalupe River (which is below the dam inaccessible. If you have ever been here before and looked at the Google Map images, you will know that normally it is a beautiful point to access the river. Just a second ago, it dawned on me to Google “Canyon Lake drought”, and I discovered in a news article published July 20, 2023, the Canyon Lake water level was reported to be 14 feet below its full level, which has led to at least 23 boat ramps being shut down.
Below is a recent map of the United States showing where we are having droughts…
A few hours ago, we needed to get some supplies from the store, and on the way back to the resort, we decided to drive by the campsite I secured for us at Fifmo for our September trip. Needless to say, if we can find somewhere else to stay during our September trip, we are probably going to cancel our Fimfo. We really like there to be activities the kids can go do within close proximity to the RV, and Fimfo doesn’t really provide for that. It always became apparent that you must rent a golf cart to traverse the resort. There isn’t much within walking distance besides the shower and restrooms.
We have spent the last hour doing some research, and all the good resorts seem to be booked, so I am not sure where we are going to camp in September. I really want to go to a Texas beach. Off to do some more hunting.
Oooo, so we have decided. We are going to stay at the Camp Margaritaville RV Resort at Crystal Beach here in Texas. They didn’t have many camp sites available, and none on the water, but at least we will have 24/7 beach access. I just love the smell of the beach, and I am excited I don’t have to wait until October for a needed, “detox at the beach.”
Well that’s my update for now.
Hope to meet y’all on the road. Hugs, Jo.
